2015 Emmy Awards Odds

2015 Emmy Awards Odds

The 67th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which honors the best television programming over the past year, will take place on Sunday, September 20th in Los Angeles, California and will be hosted by SNL alum Andy Samberg. The nominations were announced on July 16th, and just four days later one of the more prominent offshore sportsbooks had already posted odds for a number of categories.

Bovada, which is well known to bettors as a very public/square sportsbook, posted prop bets for six of the major awards including outstanding series, actor and actress. The table below displays the odds at Bovada have moved between July 21st and August 6th. These tables will be updated continuously as the Emmy’s approach.

Based on these odds, there is only one major award that can be classified as a slam dunk — Jeffrey Tambor’s performance in Transparent. The former Arrested Development star turned in an exceptional performance as a retired college professor who comes out to his family as a transgender woman after years of hiding his identity. The show garnered 11 Emmy nominations, but Tambor’s portrayal of Mort/Moira (which already garnered the actor the best actor award at the Golden Globes) was both poignant and hilarious — an incredible feat that puts the veteran actor leaps and bounds ahead of his competition.

While Tambor appears to be a lock for most outstanding actor in a comedy, perhaps the most interesting storyline is developing on the women’s side. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has won the award three straight years for her performance as the titular character in Veep, opened as a -200 favorite to once again emerge victorious. However, voters often times sour on handing out awards to the same candidates year after year — even if they are deserving. That’s why Amy Schumer seems like an excellent value at +600.

Whether she’s satirizing the mainstream media in sketches like “Last F***able Day” or her cleverly written and conceived “12 Angry Men” parody, Inside Amy Schumer has been simply brilliant this season. Schumer is incredibly skilled at pointing out hypocritical social rules, exploring her own neurosis and transforming them into funny (and often times extremely crude) sketches.

For the most outstanding actor in a drama series, Jon Hamm’s status as the clear cut favorite can likely be attributed to more to Mad Men’s seven season run rather than his performance specifically in the final season. Hollywood loves awarding lifetime achievement awards (i.e. Martin Scorsese winning for The Departed after losing out for Goodfellas), and Hamm should have a clear path with Bryan Cranston no longer blocking his way.

Since this post was originally published, Hamm’s status as the favorite have been further cemented as his odds have jumped from -350 to -600. To further drive home this point, Bovada lowered the odds for the five additional Best Actor nominees. It’s also noteworthy that Mad Men’s odds of winning Best Drama have improved from  +150 to -125 — leapfrogging Game of Thrones (+100) in the process.
