2016 Belmont Stakes Odds

2016 Belmont Stakes Odds

The 148th running of the Belmont Stakes will place on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The 1.5-mile long race is the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, although history will not be made this year.

After winning the Kentucky Derby as the +300 favorite, many horse racing fans speculated that Nyquist would duplicate American Pharoah’s feat by winning the Triple Crown. Nyquist’s Kentucky Derby win caused his odds of winning the Triple Crown to jump from +1325 to +210 at the William Hill sportsbook. Although more than 80% of tickets were backing Nyquist, sharp money was clearly on the other side.

Despite closing as an overwhelming -175 favorite to win the Preakness Stakes, Nyquist settled for third place. Exaggerator, who closed with the second best odds at +300, did an excellent job of navigating the muddy track en route to the winner’s circle.

On Tuesday morning, Bovada became the first offshore sportsbook to post odds for the 2016 Belmont Stakes with Exaggerator (+175) listed as the favorite, followed by Nyquist at +275. In a head-to-head matchup at 5Dimes, Exaggerator (-130) was a slight favorite over Nyquist (-110).

Shortly after these odds were posted, it was announced Nyquist will miss the Belmont Stakes due to a high white blood cell count. This caused Exaggerator’s odds to jump from +170 to +110. It has since moved to -120.

The table below examines how the odds to win the 2016 Belmont Stakes have moved at Bovada. It will continually be updated as the race approaches.

For what it’s worth, Exaggerator is the fourth horse since 1960 to win the Preakness Stakes after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby. Of those three previous horses, two did not race in the Belmont Stakes while one did not finish the race.
