Who will be the first overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft?
The 2017 MLB Draft begins this evening at 7 PM Eastern and will be televised on the MLB Network. The Minnesota Twins finished last season with a league-worst 59-103 record and own the top overall pick for the third time in franchise history. There’s no consensus as to who will be selected with the first pick, but there are three strong contenders: Kyle Wright, Hunter Greene, and Brendan McKay.
These three players come from vastly different backgrounds, and it will be fascinating to see which route the Twins take. Kyle Wright is a 21-year old right-handed pitcher for Vanderbilt, Brendan McCay is a 21-year old two-way player with experience as a pitcher and first baseman, and Hunter Greene is a two-way high school player with a fastball that has been clocked at over 100 miles per hour.
On Monday morning, BetOnline posted odds for the number one overall pick with Kyle Wright listed as the favorite. As the day progressed, Wright fell from +150 to +200 while McKay jumped from +200 to +125.

Most scouts believe that Greene has the highest ceiling, while Wright and McKay are viewed as the safer picks. It’s also worth noting that a prep righthander has never been selected with the first overall selection, so Minnesota may be wary about taking Greene.
