Bettors Are All Over The Astros Tonight
Yesterday, Dallas Keuchel and the Astros were mightily upset by Derek Holland and the White Sox. They closed at -250, received 85% of moneyline bets, and 79% of moneyline dollars. Tonight, bettors are expecting them to redeem themselves.
The way it currently stands, the Astros are getting 89% of bets — which would be the highest this season if it holds up. So far, there have been two teams this year that have closed with 88% of bets, one with 87%, and two with 86%. They’ve gone a combined 2-3 for -1.9 units.
If we delve deeper and look at the breakdown at each of the seven sportsbooks that provide us with this information, we can see that the two sharpest books — Bookmaker and 5Dimes — are much more evenly split, while the squarer books are all over 90%. Despite all of this public support, Houston has remained at it’s opening line at both Pinnacle (-205) and Bookmaker (-210).
This heavily lopsided action should come as somewhat expected, as bettors often believe that elite teams like the Astros can’t possibly lose two games in a row to the lowly White Sox.
Yesterday, we triggered a contrarian play on the White Sox at +230. This year, teams fitting our contrarian system are 115-116 (+30.1) units.
