Let’s take a look at some of the closer battles, starting with Clemson. The reigning champs knew they’d be losing their star QB Deshaun Watson to the NFL, and head coach Dabo Swinney was not hesitant to open up the competition for the starting job. That said, Clemson QB coach Brandon Streeter did say recently that if the season were to begin now, junior Kelly Bryant would have the starting job. The position has more or less been Bryant’s to lose since the National Championship, but freshman Hunter Johnson has earned tremendous praise this offseason, including athletic comparisons to Deshaun Watson, making the battle perhaps closer than many would’ve guessed. In the end, I don’t think it’s going to be enough to unseat Bryant, at least to begin the season. A two-quarterback system is something that Swinney has not ruled out, and would not surprise me to see from the Tigers later this season.
In Gainesville, Malik Zaire has become the favorite to win the Gators’ starting QB job. The Notre Dame transfer is more capable of making plays with his feet than his competition (specifically redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks), and has another month to learn the playbook and develop solid relationships with his offensive personnel. Franks has a year of Jim McElwain’s offense under his belt, but assuming Zaire can figure out the playbook, this is another case where I see the front-runner winning the spot.
Further south in Florida, the Miami battle presents an interesting scenario. There are four guys all with a legitimate chance to take the starting role according to the coaching staff (but of course they’re going to say that). The way I see it there are two battles simultaneously going on: the veterans (Malik Rosier vs. Evan Shirreffs) and the newbies (N’Kosi Perry vs. Cade Weldon). As the books have implied, it seems like it will ultimately come down to Rosier vs. Perry, and from the way coach Mark Richt talks about Perry, there seems to be a lot of excitement surrounding the true freshman. I like his odds (at +235) to win the job over the course of the next month.
