Brackets Finally Show Hints of Madness

After a Round One that went very close to form — based on the NCAA committee seedings (except for the Southwest region — where the better seeds went 3-5 in the opening round), Saturday finally showed some signs of major upsets.

The first # 1 Seed fell, with # 8 Butler beating # 1 Pittsburgh in a wild, foul-filled last few seconds.  Butler led for much of the first half, before Pittsburgh looked like they would take charge early in the second half.  The Southwest’s abundance of upsets in round one has resulted in #12 Richmond advancing to the Sweet 16.

Let’s take a look at early NCAA basketball betting action to see which games our team of analysts will be focusing on later.  Betting activity is much higher during the March Madness tournament — and there is potentially more contrarian value “on the table” as casual bettors lay a little money on the games:

  • The Ohio State-George Mason is currently the heaviest-bet game on the board today.  This game also currently boasts one of the largest point spreads today — with Ohio State favored by 11.5 points — the same as the Duke-Michigan game.   The public is leaning to Ohio State — but currently only near the 60/40 betting percentage area.
  • Interestingly, the most lopsided-bet game of the day is the Purdue-Va Commonwealth game, with the public loving the heavy underdog (!!).  Yes, the public likes the dog in this game in early betting action.
