Cavaliers public support reaching historical levels
LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers have flipped the proverbial switch and are rolling through the Eastern Conference playoffs. After a first-round sweep of the Indiana Pacers and grabbing an easy 2-0 series lead against the Toronto Raptors, the public has undoubtedly taken notice. Not only are bettors backing the Cavaliers, they’re backing them at historic levels.
At the time of publication, 86% of spread tickets have taken Cleveland, easily making it the most lopsided NBA playoff game in our database. In fact, since 2005 only four NBA playoff teams have reached the 80% mark:
Date | Team | Opponent | Spread Action |
---|---|---|---|
5/5/17 | Cleveland Cavaliers | Toronto Raptors | 86%* |
4/26/08 | Boston Celtics | Atlanta Hawks | 81% |
4/28/07 | Detroit Pistons | Orlando Magic | 80% |
4/28/05 | Miami Heat | Brooklyn Nets | 80% |
4/17/05 | Phoenix Suns | Memphis Grizzlies | 81% |
*Spread percentage at the time of publication.
While the sample size is certainly way too small to derive meaningful conclusions, it is interesting to note that all four teams receiving 80% of more of spread tickets failed to cover the spread.
