The Daily Steam: Moore Opportunity, Key Injuries and Full Slates
There’s tons of action going on Friday including NCAAF, NCAAB, NBA, NHL, and EPL, with plenty more coming up this weekend. Here’s a look at what bettors should know about.
Moore Opportunity for Bettors
The Dolphins announced that Matt Moore will be their starting QB in New England as Jay Cutler is out with a concussion. Miami is listed +16.5 and getting just 33% of spread bets on the road, but Moore has gone a very solid 20-8 ATS in his career as a starter (10-4 road, 10-4 home). The Patriots opened as the biggest favorites of the season, and the spread may be just high enough for the Dolphins to cover.
‘Canes Chained
On Friday afternoon Pitt (+12) upset previously undefeated Miami 24-14 to really open up the playoff race. There are so many crucial games Saturday including Alabama/Auburn, Ohio State/Michigan, Clemson/South Carolina and more. The Iron Bowl is getting the most ticket action with just over 60% of tickets on the Tide to cover -4.5.
The most lopsided bet of the weekend is actually a road underdog– Washington State +10.5 at Washington. The Cougars are getting 78% of spread bets but we’ve harped on the fact you want to avoid the trendy underdog.
Full Plate of NBA and NHL
After taking Thanksgiving off, the NBA and NHL has a combined 24 games on the slate Friday. The most popular NHL bets are the Kings (86%) and Blues (78%), while NBA bettors like the Cavs (84%) and TWolves (79%) the most. Cleveland has been a terrible bet this year but should bettors start to hop on now?
There are a number of key players out due to injury and rest including Kevin Durant, Draymond Green and Nicolas Batum and the lines are moving because of them. The Warriors opened -19 but are down to -15 against the Bulls. You can track all the latest betting trends, line moves and more here.
Sharp Money Fading Duke
There are also 60 college basketball games on deck Friday, having to share the betting action with everyone else once again. Lines tend to more more, especially totals, but in the heavily bet games we can identify sharper money going against the public. Tonight, Texas is getting just 16% of tickets but they’ve moved from +7.5 to +5.5 against Duke. Sportsbooks know they’ll continue to take Blue Devils bets, so moving the line 2 points is notable.
Upsets have been rampant in NCAAB over the last couple days throughout these neutral-site tournament games:
WKU +1750 v Purdue
Prairie View +1100 v GA St
Chaminade +925 v Cal
Cal Poly SLO +816 v CoC
On Wednesday and Thursday, moneyline underdogs went 23-44 straight up for +49.44 units won. Oh, and Marist nearly knocked off WVU as 100/1 dogs which would have been quite the payout for some.
