How Did a Loss to the Dolphins Affect the Patriots-Steelers Betting Line?
In Week 15 lookahead lines, the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook opened the Patriots as 2.5-point road favorites against the Steelers. For those unfamiliar, lookahead lines are posted every Tuesday for the following week’s NFL action and come off the board once the current week’s games are underway.
However, a wrench was thrown into the mix when the Patriots unexpectedly lost to the Dolphins on Monday Night Football despite closing as 10-point favorites. We know that standalone, nationally-televised NFL games heavily influence the public’s perception of these teams and force oddsmakers to adjust accordingly. So, how does this week’s line differ from last week’s Westgate lookahead?
Pinnacle opened the Patriots as 1-point road favorites and bettors quickly pushed the number up to -3 across the market.
Based on this movement, it appears that oddsmakers bumped the Patriots down 1.5 points from last week’s lookahead. However, bettors were happy to take advantage of the value at any number below the key number of 3.
But remember, for every market action there is often a market reaction, so don’t be surprised to see Steelers buyback show up once limits are raised or if oddsmakers are overwhelmed with Patriots money and move up to 3.5.
